I realized I could do something recently and I’ve been kicking myself for not doing it all along since. I have this pair of pants that has been slung over the back of my sewing chair for like a year, they’re ripped in a way that cannot be repaired, and I thought just maybe the fabric will be useful for something else. I’m slowly accepting that there isn’t enough there to do anything with. Normally I would send old clothes off to the thrift store, but sometime they have just seen a few too many days for that.
But there are other parts of these pants I could re-use, they were a pair of black khakis so they had a zipper that can come off the front, and they have buttons that can come off the pockets and off of the waistband.
I have an old favorite bra that is also completely worn out, and I plan to remove the underwires (patterns for cupped corsets often need these) and the clasps. The adjustment sliders will also be going into my sewing box.
I usually remove the little foam liner pads from swimsuit tops and sports bras because they just get all bunched up in the wash, and they’re too thin to do anything in that application, so I have a big stack of those in my sewing drawer as well.
I have an old pleather jacket that I had grabbed with the intention of material harvesting a long time ago that I plan on pulling all the zippers and the liner fabric out of. Old belts, sandals and purses are a great place to find buckles.
So, the next time you have some clothes that have been too loved to thrift away, consider saving a piece of them for your next cosplay.
